The Ging Wong Seminar

About

Developed and funded by Professor Ging Wong, a Corpus old member, the Ging Wong Seminar Series is designed to foster helpful interaction between Corpus graduate students and thought-leaders from around the world. The series aims to introduce Corpus postgraduates to individuals with varied career trajectories, from academia, journalism, business, and public service.

The Ging Wong Seminars are held every term followed by drinks and dinner.

Martin Wolf CBE

Martin Wolf CBE will be returning to Corpus to speak in week 7 of Trinity Term. Wolf studied PPE at Corpus Christi, before completing an MPhil at Nuffield College in 1971. After a stint at the World Bank, he joined the Financial Times, where he has been the chief economics commentator since 1996. He has was awarded a CBE in 2000 for services to financial sector. A visiting fellow at Nuffield College, Wolf also holds honorary doctorates from the University of Nottingham, University of London, London School of Economics, and KU Leuven.

The next Ging Wong Seminar will be held Monday 3rd June 2024 (Trinity Term, Week 7) at 6pm in the Rainolds Room. Martin Wolf’s talk will be followed by a dinner in college. Attendance is open to all members of Corpus Christi.

Previous Speakers

Dr Michael Sharp (Trinity 2023)

Publisher at Cambridge University Press. Specifically, Dr. Michael Sharp is responsible for academic publications in the fields of Ancient and classical history, Classics and Byzantine studies.

Dr. Sharp completed a DPhil in Classical Languages & Literature at Corpus Christi in 1999.

Gerard Baker (Hilary 2020)

Gerard Baker is Editor-at-Large at the Wall Street Journal (and former Editor in Chief, 2013-2018). His weekly column “Free Expression” appears in the WSJ every Tuesday, and he hosts the weekly podcast of the same name.

Mr. Baker studied PPE at Corpus, graduating in 1983.

Felicity Burch (Trinity 2019)

At the time of her Ging Wong seminar, Felicity Burch is the Director of Innovation and Digital at the Confederation of British Industry. She has since gone on to become Executive Director of the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.

Ms. Burch read PPE at Corpus, graduating in 2008.

Dina Gold (Hilary 2019)

Dina Gold is a journalist an author. Formerly a BBC investigative journalist, she is now senior editor at Moment magazine. Her recent book Stolen Legacy: Nazi Theft and the Quest for Justice at Krausenstrasse 17/18, Berlin, details her attempts to reclaim family property seized by the antisemitic fascist regime.

Ms. Gold was the first woman to graduate from Corpus. She continues to be engaged with the College and endowed the recent MCR renovation. After her talk, the MCR voted to hang a portrait in her honour; she is the first woman, after the Queen, to be memorialised in the common room.

Sarah Hunter (Michaelmas 2018)

At the time of her Ging Wong seminar, Sarah Hunter was Director of Public Policy at Google’s X, providing strategic advice across multiple sectors.

Ms. Hunter completed a PPE degree at Corpus in 1995.
